Description
Lead the worldwide Catholic Church as Bishop of Rome and head of the Holy See, teaching, sanctifying, and governing in continuity with apostolic tradition. Safeguard doctrine, guide pastoral mission and global outreach, and represent the Church and Vatican City to the world.
  • • Lead global prayer and promote holiness across the Church.
  • • Proclaim Scripture and preach during major liturgies.
  • • Deliver homilies, Angelus addresses, audiences, and Urbi et Orbi messages.
  • • Preside at solemn liturgies in Rome and on apostolic journeys.
  • • Issue encyclicals, apostolic exhortations, and other magisterial documents.
  • • Guard, interpret, and definitively teach Catholic doctrine when required.
  • • Appoint bishops and create cardinals; accept resignations and transfers.
  • • Convene synods of bishops and approve their conclusions.
  • • Oversee the Roman Curia and enact governance and financial reforms.
  • • Direct the canonization process and preside at canonizations and beatifications.
  • • Promote evangelization, mission, and Church unity worldwide.
  • • Encourage and set norms for catechesis, sacramental life, and liturgy.
  • • Administer sacraments and grant apostolic blessings and indulgences.
  • • Offer pastoral guidance to clergy, religious, lay leaders, and the faithful.
  • • Conduct pastoral visits to dioceses, parishes, hospitals, prisons, and communities.
  • • Advocate for peace, justice, care for creation, and protection of human dignity.
  • • Mobilize Catholic charities and agencies during crises and humanitarian emergencies.
  • • Serve as head of state of Vatican City and lead Holy See diplomacy.
  • • Maintain relations with nations and international bodies; receive ambassadors.
  • • Meet bishops during ad limina visits and provide direction to dioceses.
  • • Approve canonical legislation and issue motu proprio as needed.
  • • Foster ecumenical and interreligious dialogue and collaboration.
