Description
Investigate and enforce animal cruelty and neglect laws by conducting field investigations, collecting evidence, seizing animals when warranted, coordinating veterinary care, and supporting prosecutions through reports and testimony.
- • Investigate complaints of animal cruelty, neglect, hoarding, or fighting by interviewing witnesses and suspects.
- • Conduct site visits and surveillance; document scenes with notes, photos, and video; collect and preserve evidence, maintaining chain of custody.
- • Obtain and execute search or seizure warrants with law enforcement when required.
- • Seize animals from abusive or hazardous conditions using humane capture techniques and equipment.
- • Assess animals for injuries, malnutrition, or disease and arrange veterinary exams, treatment, or necropsies.
- • Transport seized animals safely and transfer them to approved shelters or evidence-holding facilities.
- • Ensure animals in custody receive food, water, safe housing, and daily care.
- • Coordinate humane euthanasia when required under veterinary and legal guidance.
- • Prepare detailed investigative reports, case files, and impound records.
- • Issue warnings or citations for welfare violations and coordinate arrests with police or prosecutors.
- • Testify in hearings and court proceedings and assist prosecutors in building cases.
- • Conduct compliance inspections of kennels, breeders, pet shops, and shelters for adherence to laws.
- • Educate the public and partner agencies on recognizing and reporting animal cruelty and legal obligations.
- • Respond to tips and inquiries and provide case updates as appropriate while protecting confidentiality.
- • Coordinate the final disposition of seized animals per court orders, including transfers to rescues or adoption when permitted.
