Description
Conduct field studies to determine traffic volume, speed, signal effectiveness, lighting adequacy, and other factors influencing traffic conditions, under the direction of a traffic engineer.
  • • Answer public inquiries and complaints about traffic conditions, controls, and policies.
  • • Draft layouts for signals, signs, and other control devices using CAD.
  • • Plan and refine traffic control components to improve flow, safety, and efficiency.
  • • Analyze traffic flow, crash, and development data to recommend improvements.
  • • Prepare work orders for signal, sign, and pavement marking repairs or changes.
  • • Assess lighting, sign, and marking visibility and effectiveness.
  • • Visit sites to evaluate traffic impacts and control plans; propose measures.
  • • Operate counters to record vehicular and pedestrian volumes and movements.
  • • Provide technical guidance on traffic control devices to field crews.
  • • Compile and code data from hand counts, machine tapes, and radar checks.
  • • Install, secure, and retrieve automatic traffic counters using power tools.
  • • Measure and record vehicle speeds with radar or timing devices.
  • • Document traffic delays, queues, and travel speeds through work zones.
  • • Review traffic control and barricade plans and issue permits for events or work zones; assist with revisions.
  • • Prepare charts, diagrams, and graphs to illustrate findings.
  • • Establish procedures for street closures and construction traffic control.
  • • Compute signal timing settings and speed restrictions using standard formulas.
  • • Monitor construction and utility projects for compliance with traffic control permits.
  • • Maintain and perform minor field repairs on traffic data equipment.
  • • Time signal phases and delays using stopwatches.
  • • Contribute to long-range parking supply studies and strategies.
  • • Provide road and traffic information to the public.
  • • Lay out pavement markings for striping crews.
