Description
Install, set up, and maintain traffic control devices and work zones, and conduct field studies of volume, speed, signal operation, lighting, and related factors affecting traffic, under direction of a traffic engineer or supervisor.
  • • Interact with the public and contractors about lane closures, detours, and traffic control policies; respond to complaints.
  • • Prepare and revise traffic control plans and device layouts using CAD.
  • • Assist in planning and improving traffic control systems and work zones to enhance safety and flow.
  • • Analyze traffic and crash data to recommend signal timing or control adjustments.
  • • Prepare work orders for installation, repair, or changes to signals, signs, and markings.
  • • Inspect lighting, signs, and pavement markings for visibility and effectiveness; recommend corrections.
  • • Visit project and event sites to assess traffic impacts and verify adequacy of traffic control plans.
  • • Lay out pavement markings and delineation for striping crews.
  • • Operate and monitor traffic counters to record vehicle and pedestrian volumes and movements.
  • • Provide technical guidance to crews on placement and maintenance of traffic control devices.
  • • Compile and code data from counts, detectors, and radar speed checks for computer input.
  • • Deploy and retrieve automatic traffic counters using power tools.
  • • Measure and record vehicle speeds with radar or other timing devices.
  • • Study and document traffic delays, queues, and speeds through affected areas.
  • • Review barricade and traffic control plans and assist with permits for construction, parades, and special events.
  • • Prepare charts, diagrams, and maps to illustrate findings and recommendations.
  • • Develop and implement procedures for lane and street closures and work-zone setups.
  • • Calculate signal timing settings or speed advisories using standard formulas.
  • • Inspect street and utility projects for compliance with traffic control permits and MUTCD standards.
  • • Maintain, program, calibrate, and make minor field repairs to signals, controllers, detectors, message boards, and data equipment.
  • • Time signal phases and other delays using stopwatches and logging tools.
  • • Install, set up, and remove temporary traffic control devices, including cones, signs, barricades, arrow boards, and portable signals.
  • • Provide up-to-date traffic and closure information to the public and stakeholders.
