Description
Conduct on-site investigations of traffic incidents, complaints, and roadway operations; collect, document, and analyze traffic data and physical evidence to assess flow, safety, signal timing, and lighting; prepare reports and recommendations under direction of a traffic engineer.
  • • Respond to public complaints and inquiries; gather statements and evidence on traffic issues.
  • • Prepare crash scene diagrams, location sketches, and GIS maps of problem areas.
  • • Recommend traffic control improvements based on investigative findings.
  • • Analyze traffic, crash, citation, and speed data to identify causes and remedies.
  • • Prepare work orders for repairs, maintenance, or adjustments resulting from investigations.
  • • Evaluate lighting, sign visibility, and markings to assess their role in incidents.
  • • Inspect construction and development sites to evaluate traffic impacts and safety controls.
  • • Document condition and placement of pavement markings; recommend changes or restriping.
  • • Deploy and operate traffic counters; record vehicle and pedestrian volumes and movements.
  • • Provide technical guidance to field staff during investigations and data collection.
  • • Compile and code hand counts, machine tapes, and radar checks for analysis.
  • • Install, secure, and retrieve automatic counters and sensors using power tools.
  • • Measure and record vehicular speeds using radar or timing devices.
  • • Investigate bottlenecks and delays, noting duration, queue lengths, and speeds.
  • • Review and verify traffic control plans for events or work zones; advise on permits or revisions.
  • • Prepare charts, graphs, and diagrams to document findings and support conclusions.
  • • Recommend procedures for street closures and detours based on safety assessments.
  • • Calculate and verify signal timings or speed zones using standard formulas.
  • • Monitor projects for compliance with traffic control requirements and permit conditions.
  • • Maintain and perform minor field repairs on traffic survey and investigation equipment.
  • • Time signals and other delays using stopwatches to validate operations.
  • • Assess parking utilization and safety; recommend short- and long-term improvements.
  • • Provide timely traffic and road condition information to the public and stakeholders.
