Description
Prepare and review tax returns, advise individuals and businesses on tax compliance and planning, analyze liabilities, and resolve issues with tax authorities in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
- • Prepare and file federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals and businesses in accordance with laws and regulations.
- • Maintain current knowledge of tax code changes, regulations, and accounting standards to properly evaluate financial information.
- • Maintain organized case files, including client contacts, documentation, and actions taken.
- • Confer with clients and their representatives to explain tax issues, applicable laws, and filing requirements, and to resolve return discrepancies.
- • Communicate with tax authorities by mail, phone, or electronic systems to address notices, discrepancies, and requests for supporting documentation.
- • Send reminders and guidance to clients regarding missing information, deadlines, and compliance requirements.
- • Inform clients of any overpayments or underpayments and coordinate refunds, estimated tax adjustments, or additional payments.
- • Review completed returns to confirm eligibility for credits and deductions and ensure compliance with law.
- • Assess returns to determine the need, scope, and strategy for audit support or amended filings.
- • Enter and validate tax data in tax preparation software for processing and e-filing.
- • Evaluate clients’ accounting systems and records to ensure methods are appropriate and compliant with statutory provisions.
- • Track filing and payment deadlines and monitor client payments to ensure obligations are met.
- • Verify taxpayer identification, names, calculations, and cross-check amounts against supporting documentation.
- • Analyze client tax positions, assets, and liabilities to develop plans for resolving outstanding tax issues.
- • Recommend and negotiate debt resolution options with tax authorities, such as payment plans or offers in compromise.
- • Obtain client and tax authority agreement on proposed assessments or pursue administrative appeals when appropriate.
- • Prepare supporting schedules, workpapers, and documentation for audits, appeals, or litigation support.
- • Coordinate responses to tax notices and manage correspondence, including penalty abatement requests.
- • Evaluate clients’ financial condition to support requests for hardship relief or alternative payment arrangements.
- • Represent clients in informal conferences or appeals on contested matters, under applicable authorization.
- • Answer client questions and assist them in completing tax forms and related compliance documents.
