Conduct examinations of individual and business tax returns to determine correct tax liability, ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations, and propose adjustments supported by detailed reports.
  • • Review filed tax returns to verify income, deductions, and credits allowed by law.
  • • Select returns for examination and define the audit scope, techniques, and timelines.
  • • Contact taxpayers and representatives to address discrepancies and request documentation.
  • • Analyze financial statements, ledgers, and source documents to substantiate reported items.
  • • Examine accounting methods and records for compliance with statutes and regulations.
  • • Reconcile books and third-party information to tax returns.
  • • Conduct interviews to clarify facts and resolve technical issues.
  • • Explain applicable tax laws, regulations, and findings to taxpayers and representatives.
  • • Compute proposed tax, penalties, and interest resulting from adjustments.
  • • Prepare examination workpapers, reports, and supporting documentation.
  • • Maintain case files, contact logs, and activity records.
  • • Issue examination notices and information document requests.
  • • Secure agreements to proposed changes or prepare unagreed cases for Appeals.
  • • Participate in informal appeals conferences and provide technical support.
  • • Identify fraud indicators and refer potential criminal matters to investigators.
  • • Use agency systems and data analytics to identify discrepancies and track cases.
  • • Enter case actions and findings into computer systems.
  • • Communicate proposed underpayments or overpayments and next steps to taxpayers.
  • • Coordinate with counsel or technical advisors on complex or specialized issues.
  • • Keep current with tax code changes, regulations, rulings, and accounting standards.
