Investigates human society and social behavior by analyzing groups, communities, and social institutions, including religious, political, and business organizations. Studies group dynamics, origins, and development, and evaluates how collective activities influence individual attitudes and actions.
  • • Prepare publications and reports summarizing research findings.
  • • Analyze and interpret qualitative and quantitative data to advance understanding of social behavior.
  • • Plan and conduct studies to develop and test theories on issues such as crime, inequality, group relations, poverty, and aging.
  • • Collect data on group attitudes, values, and behaviors through observation, interviews, surveys, and document review.
  • • Design, implement, and evaluate data-collection instruments and protocols.
  • • Teach sociology courses and mentor students.
  • • Direct the work of research assistants, statistical clerks, and statisticians.
  • • Advise administrators, community organizations, social workers, and policymakers on social issues and the implications of findings.
  • • Collaborate with researchers in related disciplines.
  • • Develop evidence-based approaches to address group and community problems.
  • • Observe group interactions and roles to identify issues, evaluate progress, and recommend changes.
