Description
Plan, manage, and protect wildlife refuges to conserve habitats and species while balancing public access, research, and resource stewardship.
- • Measure and assess habitat and vegetation for biological assessments, environmental reviews, and refuge monitoring programs.
- • Maintain soil stability, wetlands, and vegetation for wildlife habitat and compatible recreation.
- • Mediate agreements among refuge users, neighbors, and conservation groups on appropriate land and water use.
- • Manage habitat with prescribed fire, invasive species control, grazing, or revegetation to sustain ecological integrity.
- • Study refuge management practices and research wildlife and habitat issues to guide adaptive management.
- • Advise partners and permittees on water management, habitat enhancement, and human-wildlife conflict reduction.
- • Plan and direct construction and maintenance of refuge infrastructure, such as trails, blinds, water-control structures, fences, and erosion controls.
- • Tailor comprehensive conservation plans to species and habitat objectives and compatible public uses.
- • Develop technical standards and protocols to manage, protect, and improve refuge natural resources and visitor use.
- • Analyze wildlife use and carrying capacity to set seasons, quotas, and access levels for hunting, fishing, and recreation.
- • Plan and implement restoration of disturbed or degraded habitats.
- • Evaluate native plant communities and growth requirements to select species mixes for restoration.
- • Develop methods to protect refuges from wildfire, erosion, and pest damage and to control invasive or hazardous plants.
- • Develop and adopt improved tools and techniques for habitat restoration, monitoring, and data collection.
- • Regulate public and commercial activities through permits, enforce compliance with refuge regulations, and manage compatible uses.
- • Coordinate with federal, state, tribal, and local partners to manage, fund, and protect refuge resources.
