Description
Perform diagnostic imaging exams as a licensed radiologic technologist, producing high-quality x-ray, CT, and fluoroscopic images while ensuring patient safety and comfort. Operate imaging equipment, apply radiation safety standards, prepare and administer contrast under physician direction, and maintain accurate records and image quality control.
  • • Review images to verify diagnostic quality and completeness, repeating views as needed.
  • • Operate digital radiography, CT, and fluoroscopy/C-arm equipment to acquire diagnostic images.
  • • Verify orders, obtain informed consent as applicable, and determine exam requirements.
  • • Identify and screen patients, confirming identity, exam site/side, pregnancy status, and contraindications.
  • • Position patients and immobilize as needed to obtain required projections with minimal dose.
  • • Select and adjust technical factors and exposure parameters to achieve ALARA dose and optimal image quality.
  • • Explain procedures and monitor patients for comfort and safety throughout exams.
  • • Obtain relevant clinical history and document indications, allergies, and prior imaging.
  • • Enter exam parameters and protocols into imaging consoles; manage scan sequences and reconstructions.
  • • Process, post-process, and transmit images via PACS/RIS, ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
  • • Apply radiation protection for patients, staff, and self using shielding, collimation, and exposure controls.
  • • Set up rooms and equipment, stocking supplies and verifying readiness for procedures.
  • • Start peripheral IV lines and prepare/administer contrast media per protocol and under radiologist direction.
  • • Monitor for and report adverse reactions or changes in patient condition; initiate basic life support if needed.
  • • Assist radiologists and surgeons during fluoroscopic or interventional procedures using sterile technique.
  • • Perform mobile and OR imaging safely, including C-arm positioning and radiation safety in restricted areas.
  • • Follow physician protocols and department guidelines; maintain current exam procedure manuals.
  • • Record, process, and maintain patient and procedure data in EMR/RIS in compliance with privacy regulations.
  • • Perform routine equipment warm-ups, calibrations, and quality control; report malfunctions promptly.
  • • Maintain cleanliness and infection control standards for equipment and patient care areas.
  • • Coordinate workflow with schedulers, nurses, and other technologists to optimize patient throughput.
  • • Educate patients and families on exam preparation and post-procedure instructions.
  • • Transport or assist patients with limited mobility, including dressing and transfers using safe techniques.
  • • Participate in dose tracking and radiation safety audits; document dose indices for CT and fluoroscopy.
  • • Assist with training and precepting of students or new technologists; share best practices for positioning and technique.
  • • Manage contrast inventory and supplies, checking lot numbers, expirations, and temperature logs.
  • • Verify and reconcile images and reports, resolving mismatches and ensuring timely exam completion.
  • • Comply with regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., state licensure, ARRT, The Joint Commission).
  • • Support emergency department and trauma imaging workflows, prioritizing STAT exams.
  • • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance image quality, safety, and patient experience.
