Interventional Radiologic Technologist

Radiologic Technologists and Technicians
Description
Perform and assist with minimally invasive, image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using fluoroscopy, angiography, CT, and ultrasound. Prepare and operate interventional equipment, maintain sterile technique, administer and document contrast under physician direction, monitor patients, and ensure radiation safety and quality imaging throughout the procedure.
  • • Review angiographic, fluoroscopic, CT, or ultrasound images to confirm diagnostic or therapeutic adequacy.
  • • Operate and oversee angiography suites, fluoroscopy, C-arms, and adjunct CT/ultrasound during interventional procedures.
  • • Position and immobilize patients and adjust equipment for optimal visualization of target anatomy.
  • • Prepare and maintain a sterile field; scrub and circulate for vascular and nonvascular interventions.
  • • Set up and operate contrast power injectors and radiation dose tracking systems.
  • • Apply radiation safety practices and shielding for patients and staff, adhering to ALARA and regulations.
  • • Optimize imaging parameters, collimation, and projections per procedure protocol.
  • • Explain procedures, assess contrast allergies and NPO status, and support patient comfort and safety.
  • • Verify orders and protocols; review labs (e.g., coagulation, renal function) and pregnancy status; escalate variances.
  • • Enter procedure data and imaging parameters; document contrast volume and radiation dose indices in the record.
  • • Acquire required image sequences and roadmaps; repeat images that do not meet standards.
  • • Set up rooms and stage supplies, catheters, guidewires, stents, coils, and embolic agents.
  • • Operate PACS and hemodynamic or recording systems; ensure timely image transfer and archiving.
  • • Transport patients to and from the IR suite with appropriate monitoring and oxygen support.
  • • Monitor vitals and patient responses; report abnormal signs and assist with moderate sedation monitoring per policy.
  • • Assist physicians with interventions, including angiography, embolization, stenting, thrombolysis, biopsies, ablations, and drain placements.
  • • Operate mobile C-arms for interventional procedures in the OR, ED, or at bedside as needed.
  • • Record, process, and maintain procedure logs, implant and device usage, and charges; prepare reports.
  • • Assist with line placements (e.g., PICC, tunneled catheters, ports) under physician supervision.
  • • Provide assistance with positioning, transfers, and dressing changes for critically ill or disabled patients.
  • • Perform daily quality control, warm-up, and calibration checks; troubleshoot and report equipment malfunctions.
  • • Maintain up-to-date procedure protocols, preference cards, and radiation safety documentation.
  • • Coordinate scheduling, room turnover, and case sequencing with physicians, nursing, anesthesia, and clerical staff.
  • • Prepare and label contrast media, heparinized saline, and local anesthetics per protocol under physician direction.
  • • Assist with vascular access site management, sheath removal per policy, hemostasis, and sterile dressing application.
  • • Use fluoroscopic guidance to facilitate wire and catheter manipulation as directed by the physician.
  • • Assign or prioritize technologist duties to maintain patient flow and throughput goals.
  • • Participate in on-call coverage and respond to after-hours and emergency procedures.
  • • Educate and precept students or new staff on IR imaging techniques, positioning, and sterile practices.
  • • Ensure crash cart readiness and assist in contrast reaction or code response per protocol.
  • • Maintain inventory, order supplies, and restock rooms to ensure readiness for scheduled and emergent cases.
