Computed Tomography Radiologic Technologist (CT RT)

Radiologic Technologists and Technicians
Description
Perform computed tomography imaging using multi-slice CT scanners to produce high-quality diagnostic images. Position and prepare patients, select protocols, administer iodinated contrast, optimize radiation dose, and ensure safety, documentation, and image management in collaboration with radiologists.
  • • Review and evaluate CT images and reconstructions for diagnostic quality and completeness.
  • • Operate and troubleshoot multi-slice CT scanners to produce diagnostic images.
  • • Position patients and select CT protocols to optimize visualization of requested anatomy.
  • • Perform image reconstructions, MPR/MIP/3D post-processing, and send studies to PACS.
  • • Apply radiation safety and dose-optimization techniques (ALARA) for patients and staff.
  • • Adjust scan parameters (kVp, mA, pitch, rotation time) based on protocol and patient size.
  • • Explain CT procedures, coach breathing, and monitor patients for comfort and safety.
  • • Verify orders, review clinical indications, and select appropriate CT exams and protocols.
  • • Enter patient and exam data in RIS/CT console and document technical parameters.
  • • Obtain relevant history, including allergies, prior imaging, implants, and contrast risks.
  • • Perform scans as ordered, repeating limited sequences when needed to meet quality standards.
  • • Prepare the CT suite, injectors, supplies, and emergency equipment before exams.
  • • Manage images in PACS, verify exam completeness, and route to correct worklists.
  • • Assist with safe patient transfers and transport to and from the CT suite.
  • • Monitor patients during and after contrast; recognize and report adverse reactions.
  • • Assist radiologists with CT-guided biopsies, drainages, and interventional procedures.
  • • Perform emergent CT exams (e.g., trauma, stroke) and coordinate with ED and OR teams.
  • • Document contrast type, lot, dose, access site, and dose indices (CTDIvol/DLP).
  • • Perform CT of head, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine, and extremities; complete CTA and perfusion per protocol.
  • • Assist patients with mobility, positioning aids, and gowns, especially trauma or ICU cases.
  • • Perform daily QC, warm-up and phantom scans; monitor injector and scanner performance; report issues.
  • • Maintain and update CT protocols with radiologists and medical physicists.
  • • Handle administrative tasks such as scheduling, exam prep instructions, and authorization verification.
  • • Precept students and new staff in CT operations, safety, and protocols.
  • • Prepare and administer iodinated IV contrast using power injectors; start and maintain IVs per scope.
  • • Support CT fluoroscopy or real-time guidance during interventional procedures as directed.
  • • Prioritize and coordinate CT workflow to maintain throughput and meet STAT timelines.
  • • Collaborate with nursing, transport, and other technologists to ensure efficient patient flow.
  • • Assist lead technologist with staffing, supply management, and equipment service requests as assigned.
  • • Provide guidance on positioning, protocol selection, and dose reduction to improve image quality.
  • • Screen for contraindications, verify NPO status, and review renal function before contrast administration.
  • • Follow infection control, room turnover, and emergency response procedures; initiate BLS when needed.
