Description
Diagnose and treat diseases of the retina and vitreous; perform laser and vitreoretinal surgery and deliver intravitreal therapies to prevent vision loss and restore function. Provide postoperative care, interpret advanced imaging, and coordinate multidisciplinary management.
- • Provide vitreoretinal consultation to other medical professionals.
- • Refer patients for subspecialty or systemic care when needs exceed retina scope or resources.
- • Instruct medical students, residents, and fellows in retina examination, imaging, and procedures.
- • Develop and implement protocols for retina clinics, imaging, injections, and operating room workflows.
- • Educate patients on retinal disease, risk-factor control, treatment options, and self-monitoring.
- • Conduct clinical research on retinal diseases, imaging technologies, and therapeutics.
- • Collaborate with endocrinology, rheumatology, oncology, neurology, and primary care to optimize outcomes.
- • Provide and direct postoperative care after vitreoretinal procedures.
- • Document and evaluate ocular and systemic histories pertinent to retinal disease.
- • Coordinate low-vision services and optical aids when macular disease limits acuity.
- • Administer or prescribe intravitreal therapies (anti-VEGF, steroids, antibiotics) and topical or systemic medications as indicated.
- • Order, perform, and interpret OCT, OCT-A, fluorescein/ICG angiography, B-scan ultrasound, and fundus photography.
- • Develop individualized treatment plans for AMD, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, macular holes, detachments, and uveitis.
- • Perform retinal laser procedures including panretinal, focal/grid photocoagulation, and retinal tear prophylaxis.
- • Perform vitreoretinal surgeries such as pars plana vitrectomy, membrane peeling, scleral buckle, pneumatic retinopexy, and endolaser.
- • Manage ocular complications such as endophthalmitis, vitreous hemorrhage, and proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
- • Perform comprehensive dilated fundus examinations with indirect ophthalmoscopy and scleral depression.
- • Diagnose and treat retinal and vitreous disorders and injuries, including tears, detachments, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, epiretinal membranes, and vascular occlusions.
