Description
Diagnose and medically and surgically manage adult glaucoma and related optic neuropathies to lower intraocular pressure and prevent vision loss. Perform laser and incisional glaucoma procedures, provide longitudinal monitoring and perioperative care, and offer consultation for complex cases; may also address refractive needs related to glaucoma care.
  • • Provide glaucoma consultations to ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other medical professionals.
  • • Refer patients for ancillary subspecialty care or systemic evaluation when indicated.
  • • Instruct residents, fellows, and staff in glaucoma evaluation, lasers, and surgical techniques.
  • • Develop and implement glaucoma clinic protocols, care pathways, and surgical safety checklists.
  • • Educate patients and caregivers about glaucoma, adherence, medication use, and vision preservation strategies.
  • • Conduct or participate in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives in glaucoma care.
  • • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to co-manage comorbid ocular and systemic conditions affecting glaucoma.
  • • Provide and direct postoperative care following laser and incisional glaucoma procedures.
  • • Document detailed ocular and systemic histories, risk factors, and family history relevant to glaucoma.
  • • Prescribe topical and systemic intraocular pressure-lowering medications and manage side effects.
  • • Perform, order, and interpret tonometry, pachymetry, gonioscopy, optic nerve imaging (OCT), photography, and automated visual fields.
  • • Establish target intraocular pressures and develop individualized treatment plans based on disease stage, risks, and patient goals.
  • • Perform laser trabeculoplasty (SLT/ALT), laser peripheral iridotomy, and cyclophotocoagulation as clinically indicated.
  • • Perform glaucoma surgeries including trabeculectomy, tube shunt implantation, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), including combined cataract-glaucoma procedures.
  • • Diagnose and manage primary open-angle, angle-closure, normal-tension, and secondary glaucomas, and related complications.
  • • Manage acute angle-closure crises and other glaucoma emergencies.
  • • Provide low vision counseling or referral for advanced disease and coordinate rehabilitation resources.
  • • Monitor disease progression and treatment efficacy using structural and functional metrics and adjust therapy accordingly.
