Description
Assist ophthalmologists by performing diagnostic ocular ultrasonography and biometry—A-scan, B-scan, UBM, and pachymetry—to support diagnosis and surgical planning. Administer necessary eye drops, acquire high-quality images and measurements, maintain ultrasound equipment, ensure patient safety, and document findings.
- • Perform diagnostic B-scan ocular ultrasound to assess posterior segment pathology.
- • Perform A-scan biometry using contact or immersion techniques for axial length measurement.
- • Conduct ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) of the anterior segment as ordered.
- • Perform ultrasound pachymetry to measure corneal thickness.
- • Acquire, optimize, and annotate images and video clips according to protocol.
- • Obtain and record ocular biometry for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations.
- • Prepare preliminary observations and route studies to the ophthalmologist for interpretation.
- • Instill topical anesthetic or dilating drops per protocol.
- • Position patients and apply coupling gel to ensure safe, high-quality exams.
- • Clean, disinfect, and store ultrasound probes and accessories per infection-control standards.
- • Calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain ophthalmic ultrasound systems; schedule service as needed.
- • Verify orders, confirm patient identity and laterality, and obtain pertinent ocular histories.
- • Document procedures, measurements, and images in the electronic medical record.
- • Educate patients about the exam process and post-exam expectations.
- • Recognize urgent findings and promptly notify the ophthalmologist.
- • Adhere to ocular ultrasound safety guidelines and ALARA principles.
- • Manage supplies such as gel, probe covers, and disinfectants.
- • Assist in training or orienting staff on ocular ultrasound workflows.
