Description
Support ophthalmologists in clinic and the OR as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician–Surgical Assistant. Perform advanced diagnostics, administer ophthalmic medications per protocol, prepare and maintain the sterile field, set up and operate surgical equipment, assist intraoperatively, and provide pre- and postoperative patient care.
  • • Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications per protocol.
  • • Take and document patients' medical and ocular histories.
  • • Measure visual acuity (near, distance, pinhole, dynamic).
  • • Operate autorefractors, phoropters, tomographs, and retinoscopes.
  • • Conduct visual field testing.
  • • Perform tonometry to measure intraocular pressure.
  • • Measure corneal curvature with keratometers or ophthalmometers.
  • • Perform axial length and other biometry for surgical planning.
  • • Assess refractive status and verify lens power with a lensometer.
  • • Conduct ocular motility testing.
  • • Prepare patients, supplies, and rooms for ophthalmic surgery.
  • • Clean, sterilize, assemble, and maintain ophthalmic and surgical instruments.
  • • Set up and check operating microscopes, phaco, and vitrectomy systems.
  • • Scrub, gown, glove, and maintain a sterile field.
  • • Pass instruments and assist the surgeon during ophthalmic procedures.
  • • Prepare and handle intraocular lenses, viscoelastics, and intraoperative medications.
  • • Position and drape patients; apply eyelid speculum and protective shields as directed.
  • • Collect, label, and manage surgical specimens per policy.
  • • Document intraoperative and perioperative care and device settings.
  • • Provide pre- and postoperative instructions and perform follow-up calls.
  • • Troubleshoot and coordinate service for ophthalmic and surgical equipment.
