Description
Ensure the safe design, operation, and modification of nuclear facilities by performing safety analyses, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance activities. Develop and maintain the safety basis, procedures, and emergency preparedness, and oversee monitoring, audits, and corrective actions to protect workers, the public, and the environment.
- • Investigate incidents and near-misses to determine root causes and corrective actions.
- • Monitor facility operations to detect practices that could compromise nuclear or radiological safety.
- • Maintain current knowledge of nuclear safety codes, standards, and regulations.
- • Perform deterministic and probabilistic safety analyses for design basis and beyond design basis events.
- • Review and approve safety-related design changes, modifications, and setpoints for compliance with the safety basis.
- • Specify and evaluate safety systems, interlocks, radiation shielding, and instrumentation required for protective functions.
- • Initiate corrective actions or order shutdowns when unsafe conditions or regulatory noncompliance are identified.
- • Recommend preventive measures and engineered or administrative controls based on operating experience and test results.
- • Develop and maintain operating procedures, emergency operating procedures, and maintenance instructions that implement safety requirements.
- • Plan and oversee surveillance testing, inservice inspections, and performance monitoring of safety-related equipment.
- • Lead or support probabilistic risk assessment model updates and risk-informed decision making.
- • Direct safety oversight during operations and maintenance to ensure adherence to technical safety requirements and limits.
- • Conduct radiological dose assessments, effluent and environmental monitoring, and ALARA evaluations.
- • Develop and review waste handling, storage, and transportation practices to minimize radiological hazards.
- • Prepare and execute emergency preparedness drills, training, and evaluation of response capabilities.
- • Manage environmental and nuclear safety compliance activities and interface with regulators and auditors.
- • Prepare safety analysis reports, licensing submittals, and formal responses to regulatory inquiries.
- • Compile and present technical reports, safety evaluations, and hazard analyses to management and review boards.
- • Collaborate with operations, health physics, design engineering, and vendors to define test parameters and verify safety.
- • Participate in design and construction reviews, readiness assessments, and pre-start evaluations for new or modified systems.
