Description
Perform routine hematology testing on blood and body fluids to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Operate analyzers, prepare smears, validate results, and report findings, typically under the supervision of a medical technologist or pathologist.
  • • Perform complete blood counts (CBCs) and differentials using automated analyzers and microscopy; enter results in the LIS.
  • • Prepare, stain, and evaluate peripheral blood smears for cell morphology.
  • • Run coagulation tests (PT/INR, aPTT, fibrinogen, D-dimer) and report results.
  • • Perform reticulocyte counts, ESRs, and platelet estimates.
  • • Count cells in body fluids (e.g., CSF, synovial, serous) and perform differentials when required.
  • • Verify and validate results; review flags, delta checks, and quality control.
  • • Troubleshoot analyzer issues and analytical discrepancies; use manual backup methods as needed.
  • • Maintain, calibrate, and clean hematology and coagulation instruments; document maintenance.
  • • Prepare and standardize stains, controls, and reagents.
  • • Ensure proper specimen collection, labeling, acceptability, and handling; perform phlebotomy as needed.
  • • Recognize and promptly communicate critical or abnormal findings to providers; consult a pathologist or hematologist when indicated.
  • • Participate in quality control, proficiency testing, and regulatory and safety compliance.
  • • Train or guide laboratory assistants or new staff in hematology procedures.
