Radiological Control and Safety Technician

Hazardous Materials Removal Workers
Description
Monitor, control, and document radiological hazards in facilities handling radioactive materials. Perform surveys, establish controls and boundaries, support decontamination and waste handling, and ensure compliance with NRC/DOE, DOT, and OSHA requirements and ALARA principles. Requires specialized radiation safety training and certifications; may support packaging and transport of radioactive waste.
  • • Comply with federal, state, and site radiological control regulations and procedures.
  • • Perform radiation and contamination surveys of areas, equipment, and personnel with calibrated instruments.
  • • Monitor airborne radioactivity and operate air samplers and continuous air monitors.
  • • Establish postings, boundaries, and access controls; prepare and administer RWPs.
  • • Provide job coverage and coach workers on radiological controls, PPE, and ALARA practices.
  • • Issue, track, and read personal dosimetry; maintain exposure records.
  • • Conduct release surveys of tools and materials; document free-release decisions.
  • • Decontaminate equipment and surfaces using approved methods and materials.
  • • Collect, segregate, package, label, and stage radioactive waste per regulatory requirements.
  • • Prepare shipping papers and manifests; track radioactive waste containers and inventories.
  • • Perform operational checks and assist with calibration of radiation detection instruments.
  • • Respond to radiological alarms, spills, or emergencies and implement contamination controls.
  • • Take smears/swipes, count samples, interpret results, and report exceedances.
  • • Maintain logs, survey maps, and electronic records for audits and reporting.
  • • Support pre-job planning and briefings; define radiological hold points and controls.
  • • Inspect and verify effectiveness of containments, glovebags, and HEPA ventilation.
  • • Operate and maintain portable decontamination and ventilation equipment as needed.
  • • Coordinate with operations and waste management to schedule and oversee radiological work.
  • • Conduct sealed source inventories and leak tests; control storage and use.
  • • Participate in drills, assessments, and program improvements for radiation protection.
