Description
Manage vegetation along electric transmission and distribution rights-of-way to protect system reliability, public safety, and environmental compliance. Inspect corridors, identify hazard trees and clearance risks, develop IVM plans, coordinate contractors and landowners, ensure regulatory adherence, and support storm and wildfire response.
- • Monitor contractor compliance with utility specs, ANSI A300/Z133, and applicable regulations (e.g., NERC FAC-003, state).
- • Develop short- and long-term integrated vegetation management plans for rights-of-way.
- • Prioritize and schedule line-clearance work to maintain mandated clearances and reduce outage risk.
- • Supervise and audit tree crews and vendors for safety, quality, and productivity.
- • Prepare work packets with maps, spans, prescriptions, and access notes using GIS/mobile tools.
- • Obtain permits and landowner permissions for trimming, removals, herbicide use, and access.
- • Communicate work scope, timelines, and tree replacement policies to customers and municipalities.
- • Select pruning and removal methods that minimize risk, waste, and environmental impact.
- • Recommend compatible species planting and habitat enhancements within rights-of-way.
- • Identify sensitive areas and ensure BMPs protect soils, waterways, and cultural resources.
- • Coordinate with environmental and wildlife specialists to meet permit and seasonal restrictions.
- • Track and report vegetation-related outages and clearance violations; recommend corrective actions.
- • Use LiDAR, remote sensing, and growth models to forecast regrowth and cycle lengths.
- • Maintain vegetation inventories and clearance data in GIS; produce maps, reports, and dashboards.
- • Negotiate and manage contracts, task orders, and change requests for vegetation services.
- • Plan debris handling, chipping, and wood utilization or disposal per regulations and utility policy.
- • Support wildfire risk mitigation and public safety power shutoff vegetation assessments.
- • Conduct storm patrols, triage hazards, and support crew dispatch and restoration.
- • Review new construction projects to set vegetation setbacks and access requirements.
- • Enforce safe work practices and conduct job briefings and tailboards with crews.
- • Train or brief staff and contractors on IVM practices, species ID, and regulatory requirements.
- • Resolve customer complaints and property impact claims related to tree work.
- • Audit completed work for clearance, quality, and documentation accuracy.
- • Budget and forecast vegetation management costs and track unit rates.
- • Patrol transmission and distribution corridors to assess clearances and identify hazard trees.
