Description
Design and implement silvicultural systems to establish, grow, and sustain forest stands for timber, ecological, and recreational objectives. Develop prescriptions for regeneration, thinning, and vegetation management; coordinate seed and seedling production, site preparation, and planting; monitor stand growth and health; and ensure treatments protect habitat, water, soils, and comply with environmental regulations.
- • Develop silvicultural prescriptions for regeneration, thinning, pruning, and release to meet management objectives.
- • Inventory and analyze stand structure, species composition, soils, and site productivity; model growth and yield.
- • Select species, seed sources, and stock types; set planting densities and spacing.
- • Plan and oversee site preparation using mechanical, chemical, or prescribed fire methods with minimal environmental impact.
- • Coordinate seed collection, nursery production, seedling handling, and quality assurance.
- • Supervise planting crews and contractors; ensure safety and quality standards.
- • Plan and manage precommercial and commercial thinnings and vegetation control treatments.
- • Diagnose and manage insects, diseases, competing vegetation, and abiotic stressors.
- • Monitor survival, stocking, growth, and health; conduct surveys and implement adaptive management.
- • Prepare maps, prescriptions, and reports; maintain GIS and treatment records.
- • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, BMPs, and certification requirements.
- • Integrate wildlife habitat features, riparian buffers, and retention into treatment designs.
- • Collaborate with harvest planners, engineers, fire, and wildlife staff to align treatments and access.
- • Design regeneration harvest systems (e.g., clearcut with reserves, shelterwood, seed-tree, selection) appropriate to site and objectives.
- • Plan and oversee herbicide prescriptions and applications in accordance with regulations.
- • Evaluate soil and water impacts; implement erosion control and water-quality protection measures.
- • Develop budgets, schedules, and contracts for silviculture operations; track costs and performance.
- • Train and mentor field crews and junior staff in silvicultural methods and safety.
- • Conduct trials and operational studies to improve techniques and select improved genetic material.
- • Use remote sensing, UAVs, and sampling protocols to assess stand conditions and treatment results.
- • Certify reforestation compliance and recommend remedial actions when standards are not met.
- • Engage with landowners, agencies, and the public to explain prescriptions and outcomes.
- • Plan fuel reduction and stand resiliency treatments; coordinate prescribed burning with fire staff.
- • Update forest inventories and treatment unit boundaries after operations.
