Description
Perform transthoracic and related echocardiographic ultrasound exams to acquire and analyze images of the heart and great vessels, assessing structure, function, and blood flow for cardiologist interpretation.
- • Select echocardiographic views and cine loops, noting abnormalities in chambers, valves, pericardium, and great vessels.
- • Monitor image quality during scans and adjust settings to optimize diagnostic value.
- • Observe and care for patients before, during, and after exams to ensure safety and comfort.
- • Provide measurements and a technical summary of findings to the cardiologist.
- • Operate ultrasound systems to obtain 2D, M-mode, spectral Doppler, and color flow images.
- • Choose transducers, presets, and patient positioning to obtain optimal acoustic windows.
- • Decide when to extend the exam or add protocols, such as contrast or bubble studies, per lab policy.
- • Obtain and document cardiovascular history, symptoms, medications, and prior test results.
- • Prepare patients by explaining the procedure, verifying identity and orders, applying ECG leads, and placing gel.
- • Record, label, and archive images and measurements in PACS with accurate DICOM data.
- • Coordinate with clinicians during stress echocardiography, contrast studies, or TEE support.
- • Calculate and document chamber dimensions, wall thickness, ejection fraction, valve gradients, and regurgitation severity.
- • Maintain exam worksheets, reports, and quality assurance records per lab and accreditation standards.
- • Follow infection control and safety policies; obtain informed consent when required.
- • Clean and disinfect transthoracic and TEE probes; perform equipment checks and arrange service.
- • Maintain supplies including ECG electrodes, gel, contrast agents, and sterile covers.
- • Train and mentor students or new sonographers in scanning techniques and protocols.
- • Schedule exams and assist with workflow, image archiving, and record keeping.
- • Provide basic life support and respond to patient emergencies during exams.
- • Participate in continuous quality improvement, accreditation activities, and peer review of studies.
