Description
Perform transthoracic and related echocardiographic ultrasound exams to acquire and analyze images of the heart and great vessels, assessing structure, function, and blood flow for cardiologist interpretation.
  • • Select echocardiographic views and cine loops, noting abnormalities in chambers, valves, pericardium, and great vessels.
  • • Monitor image quality during scans and adjust settings to optimize diagnostic value.
  • • Observe and care for patients before, during, and after exams to ensure safety and comfort.
  • • Provide measurements and a technical summary of findings to the cardiologist.
  • • Operate ultrasound systems to obtain 2D, M-mode, spectral Doppler, and color flow images.
  • • Choose transducers, presets, and patient positioning to obtain optimal acoustic windows.
  • • Decide when to extend the exam or add protocols, such as contrast or bubble studies, per lab policy.
  • • Obtain and document cardiovascular history, symptoms, medications, and prior test results.
  • • Prepare patients by explaining the procedure, verifying identity and orders, applying ECG leads, and placing gel.
  • • Record, label, and archive images and measurements in PACS with accurate DICOM data.
  • • Coordinate with clinicians during stress echocardiography, contrast studies, or TEE support.
  • • Calculate and document chamber dimensions, wall thickness, ejection fraction, valve gradients, and regurgitation severity.
  • • Maintain exam worksheets, reports, and quality assurance records per lab and accreditation standards.
  • • Follow infection control and safety policies; obtain informed consent when required.
  • • Clean and disinfect transthoracic and TEE probes; perform equipment checks and arrange service.
  • • Maintain supplies including ECG electrodes, gel, contrast agents, and sterile covers.
  • • Train and mentor students or new sonographers in scanning techniques and protocols.
  • • Schedule exams and assist with workflow, image archiving, and record keeping.
  • • Provide basic life support and respond to patient emergencies during exams.
  • • Participate in continuous quality improvement, accreditation activities, and peer review of studies.
