Description
Design and create handmade textile artworks and products for sale and exhibition using fiber techniques such as weaving, knitting, felting, dyeing, embroidery, and quilting.
  • • Create functional or decorative textile pieces by weaving, knitting, crocheting, felting, embroidery, or quilting.
  • • Prepare and process fibers and fabrics by spinning, carding, cutting, stitching, and assembling components.
  • • Warp, thread, and operate looms or fiber equipment; adjust tension, gauge, and patterns.
  • • Dye, print, or otherwise surface-treat textiles using methods such as natural dyeing, shibori, batik, or screen printing.
  • • Select fibers, yarns, fabrics, and dyes for color, texture, durability, drape, weight, and purpose.
  • • Apply finishes such as washing, blocking, steaming, pressing, and setting dyes.
  • • Develop concepts, motifs, and collections for textile works and products.
  • • Specify fiber content, weave/knit structure, dimensions, stitch counts, and finishes.
  • • Consult with clients or galleries to assess needs, commissions, and feedback.
  • • Create weaving drafts, stitch charts, paper patterns, or templates to guide production.
  • • Produce samples or swatches and prototypes to test techniques and colorways.
  • • Sketch designs or develop patterns using textile/CAD software.
  • • Photograph and market work via websites, social media, and brochures.
  • • Plan packaging, display, labeling, and pricing for retail and exhibitions.
  • • Research textile trends, sustainable materials, and sales venues; plan and attend fiber shows.
