Teach Family and Consumer Sciences to secondary students, delivering hands-on instruction in nutrition, culinary arts, child development, consumer education, textiles, interior design, and personal finance; manage safe, standards-aligned labs and projects that build life and career readiness.
  • • Prepare materials and labs for culinary, textile, child development, and consumer education activities.
  • • Maintain accurate and complete student records per laws, CTE, and district policies.
  • • Instruct students individually and in groups using demonstrations, labs, projects, and discussions.
  • • Establish and enforce classroom, lab, and kitchen safety procedures and behavior expectations.
  • • Observe and evaluate students’ performance, employability skills, teamwork, and safety practices.
  • • Instruct and monitor students in safe use and care of appliances, sewing machines, tools, and lab materials.
  • • Plan balanced instruction with demonstrations, hands-on labs, and reflection to promote inquiry and problem-solving.
  • • Prepare, administer, and grade assessments, lab rubrics, and projects to measure learning.
  • • Enforce school and program policies, including safety, sanitation, and equity guidelines.
  • • Assign and grade classwork, labs, and homework aligned to standards.
  • • Teach knowledge and skills in nutrition, culinary arts, food science, child development, family relationships, consumer economics, textiles, interior design, and personal finance.
  • • Set clear objectives and success criteria for each unit, lesson, lab, and project.
  • • Integrate technology such as nutrition analysis apps, budgeting tools, CAD/design software, and digital portfolios.
  • • Plan and supervise work-based learning, internships, and job shadows in childcare, hospitality, and consumer services.
  • • Prepare students for postsecondary options and independent living by building life and career readiness skills.
  • • Communicate with parents/guardians, counselors, and administrators to address academic and behavioral concerns.
  • • Develop course syllabi and unit plans aligned with state FCS and CTE standards.
  • • Advise and support students with academic concerns, career interests, and personal skill development.
  • • Select, purchase, receive, store, issue, and inventory foods, textiles, small appliances, and lab supplies; maintain sanitation logs.
  • • Stay current with trends, certifications, and best practices in FCS, such as ServSafe and child development standards.
  • • Collaborate with special educators, counselors, and support staff to meet individual student needs.
  • • Provide remediation, enrichment, and differentiated instruction for diverse learners.
  • • Prepare required reports on student progress, competencies, safety training, and program outcomes.
  • • Meet with families to discuss progress and resource needs, including nutrition, budgeting, and community supports.
  • • Organize class projects, catering events, school-based enterprises, simulations, field trips, and guest speakers from industry.
  • • Attend professional development, CTE consortium meetings, and teacher workshops to maintain competence.
  • • Sponsor and advise FCCLA or related student organizations and competitions.
  • • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and revise FCS curricula and cross-curricular initiatives.
  • • Facilitate industry-recognized credentialing and connect students with job placement services and apprenticeships.
  • • Coordinate lesson pacing and assessment calendars with department and school teams.
  • • Serve on school committees and participate in staff meetings and duties as assigned.
  • • Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant lab environment; oversee equipment maintenance and safety inspections.
  • • Provide accommodations and adaptive equipment to ensure all students can access kitchens, labs, and classroom activities.
