Teach secondary students automotive technology, covering vehicle systems, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair in classroom and shop settings, with an emphasis on safety, industry standards, and career readiness.
  • • Prepare the shop, vehicles, tools, and instructional materials for labs and class activities.
  • • Maintain accurate records of grades, lab hours, certifications, and safety training per policy.
  • • Instruct students in classroom and shop using lectures, demonstrations, simulations, and hands-on labs.
  • • Establish and enforce shop safety rules, PPE use, and procedures to maintain an orderly lab.
  • • Observe and evaluate students' technical skills, safety practices, teamwork, and professionalism.
  • • Teach and monitor proper use and care of lifts, jacks, torque tools, meters, scan tools, and shop equipment.
  • • Plan balanced lessons that integrate theory, demonstrations, and shop practice on vehicle systems.
  • • Prepare, administer, and grade written, performance, and ASE-style assessments.
  • • Enforce district and school policies, including attendance, conduct, and shop access.
  • • Assign and grade technical worksheets, repair orders, and reflective write-ups.
  • • Teach competencies for entry-level automotive technicians, including diagnostics, maintenance, and customer communication.
  • • Set and communicate clear learning objectives, safety expectations, and performance criteria for each unit.
  • • Use computerized service information, repair databases, OBD-II scan tools, and multimedia to support instruction.
  • • Coordinate and supervise work-based learning, internships, and job shadowing with dealerships and repair shops.
  • • Promote persistence, problem-solving, and career exploration within transportation pathways.
  • • Confer with parents/guardians, counselors, and administrators regarding progress, behavior, and career plans.
  • • Develop course syllabi, unit plans, and pacing guides aligned to state CTE and ASE Education Foundation standards.
  • • Advise students on industry certifications (e.g., ASE entry-level, EPA 609), postsecondary programs, and career paths.
  • • Select, order, inventory, and issue shop equipment, parts, consumables, fluids, and PPE.
  • • Stay current on automotive technology, including EV/hybrid systems, ADAS, and emerging diagnostics.
  • • Collaborate with special education staff to implement IEP/504 accommodations safely in the shop.
  • • Provide remediation, tutoring, and targeted skill labs for students needing extra help.
  • • Prepare required reports on grades, attendance, certifications, incidents, and program outcomes.
  • • Meet with families to review progress and resource needs and to plan supports.
  • • Plan and supervise shop projects, field trips to industry sites, guest technician speakers, and vendor demonstrations.
  • • Attend CTE meetings, ASE and manufacturer trainings, and teacher workshops to maintain professional competence.
  • • Sponsor automotive club activities, SkillsUSA teams, and community service clinics.
  • • Collaborate with math, science, and ELL teachers to integrate academics and technical vocabulary.
  • • Assist students with job placement, apprenticeships, and referrals to workforce agencies.
  • • Coordinate lesson schedules and shared lab resources with other CTE instructors.
  • • Attend staff meetings and serve on school and program advisory or safety committees.
  • • Perform assigned school duties such as hallway supervision, event coverage, and bus duty.
  • • Provide adaptive tools, assistive technology, and accessible lab setups for students with disabilities.
  • • Implement OSHA and environmental compliance, including SDS use, spill response, and hazardous waste handling.
  • • Maintain and schedule maintenance/calibration for shop equipment and ensure safe vehicle storage and key control.
