Description
Monitor and interpret patients' cardiac rhythms using telemetry and ECG systems to support timely clinical decisions. Set up and maintain monitors, document arrhythmias, and promptly alert care teams; may perform basic EKGs and assist with lead placement and patient education.
  • • Monitor heart rhythms and rates on telemetry/ECG; notify clinicians of significant changes or life-threatening arrhythmias.
  • • Continuously observe monitors; verify alarms and distinguish artifact from true rhythm changes.
  • • Record and label rhythm strips at required intervals and for events; measure PR, QRS, QT, and ST-T changes per protocol.
  • • Admit, assign, and discharge patients in central monitoring systems; verify patient identifiers and orders.
  • • Explain monitoring procedures and electrode care to patients.
  • • Prepare skin and place or assist with placement of electrodes and telemetry transmitters; confirm proper lead configuration.
  • • Check and maintain telemetry/ECG equipment; replace batteries and leads; troubleshoot signal quality.
  • • Adjust monitor parameters and alarm limits per orders or protocols.
  • • Maintain logs and reports of monitored rhythms; chart and distribute to providers.
  • • Coordinate with nursing to ensure patient safety during monitoring and transport.
  • • Activate rapid response or code procedures for emergent rhythms per policy.
  • • Follow infection control, safety, and confidentiality requirements.
  • • Train or precept new monitor technicians or unit staff.
  • • Perform 12-lead ECGs and assist with Holter or event monitor setup as allowed by facility policy.
