Description
Cardiovascular Technologists (CVTs) perform and assist with diagnostic and interventional procedures involving the heart and blood vessels. They operate ECG, hemodynamic, and imaging systems; prepare and monitor patients; maintain sterile technique; and document findings to support physician diagnosis and therapy.
- • Monitor vital signs and ECG rhythms during diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, alerting the physician to changes.
- • Monitor patient comfort, safety, and responses during tests and interventions.
- • Explain procedures to patients to gain cooperation and reduce anxiety.
- • Prepare, position, and drape patients for cardiovascular tests and procedures.
- • Perform resting ECGs and treadmill/pharmacologic stress tests per protocol.
- • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot hemodynamic monitoring and recording systems.
- • Observe waveforms, pressure gauges, and imaging displays to assess cardiovascular status.
- • Operate fluoroscopy and related imaging equipment to acquire cardiovascular images under physician direction.
- • Prepare and assist with the administration of contrast media and medications as authorized.
- • Assist physicians with cardiac catheterizations, angiography, angioplasty, stent placement, and pacemaker/ICD implants.
- • Maintain a sterile field and handle instruments, catheters, and devices appropriately.
- • Attach electrodes and operate ECG equipment to obtain diagnostic tracings.
- • Adjust equipment settings and controls according to orders and protocols.
- • Calculate and document hemodynamic parameters such as cardiac output and valve areas.
- • Compare recorded measurements with reference norms and flag abnormalities for review.
- • Obtain and document patient identification, histories, consents, and test results.
- • Perform equipment checks, routine maintenance, and minor repairs; coordinate service when needed.
- • Train or precept students and new technologists in procedures, safety, and equipment use.
- • Perform administrative tasks, including scheduling, inventory management, and charge capture.
