Acquire and analyze transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiograms; document measurements; and collaborate with physicians to support patient care.
- • Check, calibrate, and maintain echocardiography equipment; troubleshoot minor issues and report malfunctions.
- • Adjust protocols and settings based on physician orders or lab standards.
- • Document measurements and technical impressions; upload studies to PACS and complete worksheets.
- • Assist with scheduling, documentation, and supply management as needed.
- • Participate in quality assurance, accreditation, and peer review activities.
- • Precept and train students or new technologists in echocardiography procedures.
- • Perform transthoracic echocardiograms to assess cardiac structure and function.
- • Perform or assist with transesophageal echocardiograms, including patient preparation and monitoring.
- • Conduct treadmill or pharmacologic stress echocardiography while monitoring ECG, blood pressure, and symptoms.
- • Explain procedures, obtain consent per policy, and reduce patient anxiety.
- • Verify patient identity; obtain and document pertinent cardiac history and indications.
- • Prepare and position patients; attach ECG leads for image gating.
- • Optimize images by adjusting transducer position, depth, gain, and Doppler settings.
- • Acquire standard and additional views; record cine loops and still images per protocol.
- • Obtain spectral and color Doppler data; measure velocities, gradients, and regurgitation.
- • Calculate ejection fraction, valve areas, chamber dimensions, and cardiac output.
- • Compare measurements to reference ranges and note abnormalities for physician review.
- • Alert physicians to critical findings or patient instability during or after exams.
- • Administer or assist with administration of ultrasound contrast or agitated saline; monitor for reactions.
- • Maintain aseptic technique; clean, disinfect, and reprocess probes, including TEE probes, per guidelines.
