Description
Install and repair refractory linings by laying firebrick and block and placing castables, plastics, and ceramic fiber to line furnaces, kilns, boilers, and other thermal-process equipment; mix and apply materials, align and finish joints, and perform demolition, cleanup, curing, and dry-out to return units to service.
  • • Read blueprints, isometrics, and specs to determine lining design, materials, and thickness.
  • • Measure and mark layout with levels, plumb bobs, and lasers.
  • • Build corners, arches, and rings; align courses and maintain bond and expansion joints.
  • • Cut and shape firebrick and block with saws, hammers, or grinders.
  • • Mix refractory castables, mortars, and plastics to specified ratios.
  • • Lay firebrick and tile with high-temperature mortars in furnaces, kilns, and boilers.
  • • Install anchors, studs, and hexmesh for castable and fiber systems.
  • • Set forms and place, vibrate, and finish castable linings; strip forms after cure.
  • • Ram plastic refractory and gun/shotcrete or spray refractory to required density and thickness.
  • • Remove burned or damaged refractory; clean shells and surfaces of slag, dust, and scale.
  • • Check alignment, thickness, and joint quality; correct defects.
  • • Apply ceramic fiber blankets/modules, coatings, and washes.
  • • Perform controlled curing and dry-out/heat-up per procedures; record temperatures.
  • • Follow confined space, hot work, and LOTO safety practices; maintain tools and housekeeping.
