Description
Study the origins, behavior, ecology, diseases, genetics, and life processes of birds. Specialize in avian research and population management. Collect and analyze biological data to assess the environmental effects of land and water use on bird species and habitats.
  • • Advise the public on bird identification, conservation, hunting ordinances, and nuisance bird issues.
  • • Monitor compliance with wildlife and habitat laws (e.g., Migratory Bird Treaty Act) and report violations.
  • • Develop or recommend management plans for bird populations and habitats in consultation with stakeholders.
  • • Conduct literature reviews on avian ecology, management, and conservation.
  • • Study birds in natural habitats; assess environmental and industrial impacts; recommend alternative practices.
  • • Survey and estimate bird populations and habitat conditions using point counts, banding, and telemetry.
  • • Identify and classify birds by morphology, vocalizations, and genetics.
  • • Publish findings, write technical reports, and present to agencies, schools, clubs, and conservation groups.
  • • Investigate avian origin, evolution, behavior, life histories, diseases, development, genetics, and distribution.
  • • Manage grants, budgets, permits, public outreach, and supervision of field staff and volunteers.
  • • Design and conduct field and laboratory studies with live birds under controlled or natural conditions.
  • • Coordinate surveillance and prevention programs for avian diseases (e.g., avian influenza, West Nile virus).
  • • Prepare and curate bird specimens, samples, and slides for identification and study.
  • • Collect, necropsy, and microscopically examine bird specimens as permitted.
