Description
Officiate at horse races by managing jockey weigh-outs and weigh-ins. Verify compliance with assigned weights and equipment rules, maintain official records, announce changes, and report discrepancies to stewards and racing authorities.
  • • Conduct pre-race weigh-outs to confirm assigned riding weights and permitted equipment.
  • • Conduct post-race weigh-ins to verify carried weight and race eligibility.
  • • Calibrate and test scales before and during race programs; log verification checks.
  • • Record official weights, overweights, allowances, and equipment particulars.
  • • Post and announce rider changes, scratches, weight changes, and overweights to stewards, tote, and the public.
  • • Verify rider licenses, credentials, and apprentice allowances.
  • • Coordinate with stewards, the racing secretary, paddock officials, and valets on compliance matters.
  • • Inspect saddles, saddle cloths, lead pads, and other gear for conformity with rules.
  • • Ensure prohibited items are excluded from the scale and permitted items are weighed correctly.
  • • Resolve weight-related questions and complaints and report potential infractions to stewards.
  • • Assign and confirm correct saddle cloth numbers, colors, and silks for each entry.
  • • Maintain rider check-in and call times to ensure timely reporting to the paddock and post.
  • • Prepare and submit official weight sheets and incident reports after each race.
  • • Secure and control access to the jockeys’ room and scales area.
  • • Brief riders, valets, and new officials on weighing procedures and applicable regulations.
  • • Maintain historical records of weights, changes, penalties, and incidents for regulatory review.
