Description
Psychiatric Technician (PT) provides direct care to individuals with mental health or developmental conditions under the direction of psychiatrists, nurses, and other clinicians. Monitors and documents physical and emotional status, supports treatment and rehabilitation plans, assists with personal care, and administers oral and injectable medications per orders, policy, and state regulations.
  • • Monitor and document patients' physical and emotional status; report changes to clinical staff.
  • • Provide basic nursing, psychiatric, and personal care for individuals with mental health or developmental conditions.
  • • Observe, engage, and redirect patient behaviors; offer coaching and supportive communication.
  • • Obtain and record vital signs, weight, intake/output, and other measures using approved devices.
  • • Encourage participation in work, social, recreational, and therapeutic activities to build skills and relationships.
  • • Assist psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, and therapists in implementing treatment and rehabilitation plans.
  • • Teach daily-living and wellness strategies that promote independence and recovery.
  • • Use verbal de-escalation and, when required, approved physical restraints for violent or suicidal patients.
  • • Assist with hygiene, dressing, feeding, toileting, and maintaining clean living areas.
  • • Administer prescribed oral and injectable medications within scope and per policy.
  • • Dispense medications and maintain accurate MAR and inventory records.
  • • Conduct admissions interviews; gather history and complete required forms and screenings.
  • • Co-facilitate psychoeducational or skills groups as ordered in the treatment plan.
  • • Coordinate family contacts and conferences as directed by the care team.
  • • Train and mentor new staff on unit procedures and safety protocols.
  • • Escort patients to tests, therapies, or external medical appointments and ensure safe transport.
