Description
Diagnose diseases by evaluating cells from body fluids, exfoliative samples, and fine-needle aspirations (FNAs), and direct cytology laboratory services. Perform on-site adequacy assessments, order ancillary studies, and communicate findings to guide patient care.
  • • Interpret gynecologic cytology (Pap tests) using standardized reporting systems.
  • • Evaluate non-gynecologic cytology from fluids, brushings, and washings.
  • • Perform palpation-guided FNAs and provide rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) with adequacy assessments.
  • • Interpret FNA smears and cell blocks to diagnose benign and malignant lesions.
  • • Correlate cytology findings with histology, imaging, and clinical data.
  • • Prepare, triage, and direct processing of cytologic specimens, including liquid-based preparations and cell blocks.
  • • Order and interpret ancillary tests on cytology samples, such as immunocytochemistry, HPV testing, in situ hybridization, PCR, or NGS.
  • • Write concise cytology reports with standardized terminology and management recommendations.
  • • Communicate urgent and significant results to treating clinicians and participate in tumor boards.
  • • Consult with clinicians on test selection, specimen collection, and adequacy.
  • • Supervise and mentor cytotechnologists, residents, and fellows.
  • • Manage cytology laboratory operations, quality control, and regulatory compliance (e.g., CLIA/CAP).
  • • Develop, validate, or adopt new cytology methods, instruments, or digital/AI tools.
  • • Conduct cytopathology research and present findings.
  • • Educate physicians, trainees, and laboratory staff in cytology practices.
  • • Review prior cases for quality assurance and perform discrepancy analyses.
  • • Identify infectious organisms and other non-neoplastic processes in cytologic preparations.
  • • Testify as an expert witness in cytology-related cases.
  • • Maintain continuing education and stay current with advances in cytopathology.
