Description
Under the direct supervision of a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant, the Physical Therapy Aide (PTA) supports patient care by preparing treatment areas and equipment, assisting patients with exercises and mobility as delegated, transporting and safeguarding patients, and performing cleaning, stocking, and basic clerical duties to keep therapy services safe and efficient.
- • Clean and organize treatment areas; disinfect equipment after use.
- • Prepare treatment rooms, equipment, and supplies before sessions.
- • Verify patient identity and assist with check-in or escorts as needed.
- • Transport patients to and from therapy areas via wheelchair or with standing support.
- • Assist, motivate, and guard patients practicing prescribed exercises or functional activities under PT/PTA direction.
- • Provide standby assistance during transfers and short ambulation as instructed.
- • Secure patients on therapy equipment and ensure safety straps/supports are in place.
- • Observe and promptly report patient responses, pain, or safety concerns to the PT/PTA.
- • Take basic vital signs and record delegated measurements as directed.
- • Assist patients with dressing and with donning/doffing braces, splints, or slings as instructed.
- • Change linens and restock clean towels and pillowcases per protocol.
- • Arrange, stock, and label treatment supplies to maintain order and availability.
- • Maintain and inspect equipment and furniture; perform basic assembly or disassembly as instructed.
- • Prepare hot/cold packs and non-electrical therapy materials as directed by the clinician.
- • Document delegated tasks performed, patient attendance, and equipment set-up per policy.
- • Perform clerical duties: answer phones, take messages, file, and complete forms.
- • Monitor inventory; request or order supplies to prevent shortages.
- • Communicate with PT/PTA and the care team to coordinate patient flow and room turnover.
- • Schedule patient appointments and help coordinate therapists’ calendars.
