Description
Assess, diagnose, and manage obstetric and gynecologic conditions across the lifespan, independently and as part of an OB-GYN care team. Provide prenatal, antepartum, postpartum, and routine gynecologic care with emphasis on health promotion, contraception, fertility, and disease prevention. Order, perform, and interpret relevant diagnostics; perform office procedures; and prescribe medications and contraceptives within scope. Must be a registered nurse with specialized graduate education as a nurse practitioner.
- • Educate patients on pregnancy, postpartum, contraception, STI prevention, and menopause self-management.
- • Schedule prenatal, postpartum, and gynecologic follow-up visits.
- • Counsel on medication use in pregnancy and lactation, hormonal therapies, and potential interactions.
- • Order, perform, or interpret prenatal labs, Pap/HPV tests, STI screens, urinalysis, and obstetric or pelvic ultrasounds as permitted.
- • Analyze obstetric, gynecologic, sexual, and family histories with exam findings to form diagnoses.
- • Diagnose and treat acute OB-GYN problems such as UTIs, vaginitis, STIs, mastitis, and abnormal uterine bleeding.
- • Manage chronic women's health conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, infertility workups, and menopausal symptoms.
- • Collaborate to manage high-risk or complex pregnancies and gynecologic emergencies, escalating to physicians as needed.
- • Treat or refer for common comorbid conditions affecting reproductive health, including anemia, hypertension, thyroid disease, and headaches.
- • Consult with and refer to maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, urogynecology, gynecologic oncology, breast specialists, or genetics.
- • Monitor for and respond to adverse drug effects in pregnant or lactating patients and other vulnerable groups.
- • Develop evidence-based obstetric and gynecologic care plans aligned with professional guidelines.
- • Perform office procedures such as pelvic exams, Pap smears, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, IUD and implant insertion/removal, wet mounts, immunizations, and STI treatments.
- • Conduct well-woman exams, breast exams, and preconception or prenatal physicals.
- • Prescribe medications and contraceptives within legal scope, considering efficacy, safety, and cost.
- • Provide counseling on preconception health, prenatal nutrition and weight gain, breastfeeding, and postpartum recovery.
- • Recommend diagnostic or therapeutic interventions that are safe, acceptable, and cost-effective in pregnancy and gynecologic care.
- • Deliver behavior-change counseling on smoking cessation, substance use, sexual health, and physical activity.
- • Determine medication dosages, routes, and frequencies appropriate for pregnancy, lactation, age, and comorbidities.
- • Advocate for accessible reproductive and prenatal care and reduced environmental reproductive health risks.
- • Connect patients and families with resources such as WIC, lactation support, doulas, behavioral health, and social services.
- • Maintain complete prenatal records, gynecologic documentation, and care plans.
- • Stay current with OB-GYN literature, ACOG updates, and professional education.
- • Keep abreast of payer policies and billing for maternity care, contraception, procedures, and preventive services.
- • Maintain knowledge of state regulations for NP practice, prescriptive authority, and reproductive health services.
- • Maintain clinic policies and procedures for safety, sterilization, and infection control.
- • Supervise or coordinate clinical and support staff in the OB-GYN setting.
