Lay out full-scale lines and develop templates and patterns from design data for wood models, jigs, and production tools; verify geometry and issue patterns to manufacturing.
  • • Read blueprints, drawings, or specifications to determine datums, sizes, and shapes.
  • • Lay out full-scale lines and sectional patterns on the loft floor using offsets and reference datums.
  • • Fair curves and surfaces with battens and splines to achieve true, smooth shapes.
  • • Verify dimensions, contours, and symmetry with templates, gauges, and measuring devices.
  • • Plan, develop, and draw outlines of units, parts, and full-scale mock-ups from design data.
  • • Create full-size templates, pattern boards, and molds from loft layouts.
  • • Transfer loft layouts to wood stock and mark cut lines, allowances, and reference points.
  • • Cut and shape template and pattern pieces with bandsaws, planers, or hand tools as needed.
  • • Mark identifying information, datums, and assembly instructions on patterns and templates.
  • • Fabricate work aids such as scrapers, checking fixtures, and contour templates.
  • • Maintain loft and pattern records, revisions, and storage.
  • • Coordinate with designers and shop leads to resolve discrepancies and update layouts.
  • • Build jigs and guides derived from lofted geometry for special assemblies.
  • • Finish and seal templates or patterns with protective coatings for durability.
  • • Issue patterns and layout information to designated machine operators.
