Sort logs by species, size, grade, and destination in yards, millponds, or log decks. Inspect and mark logs, measure dimensions, and direct equipment or crews to move and stage logs safely and efficiently.
  • • Sort logs by species, size, grade, and destination using established criteria.
  • • Record sort counts, volumes, and load information in tally books or handheld devices.
  • • Mark logs with paint, tags, or spray colors to indicate sort, species, or destination, or call out sorts to markers.
  • • Measure log length and diameter to determine proper bin placement, using measuring devices and conversion tables.
  • • Mark and trim logs for bucking per specifications to meet mill requirements.
  • • Identify substandard, oversize, or special logs for rework, return, or alternative processing.
  • • Inspect logs for defects such as rot, checks, sweep, knots, breaks, and water damage.
  • • Use hand signals or radios to direct loaders, cranes, and boom crews in log movement.
  • • Operate or monitor conveyors, log decks, booms, and sorting bins to place logs correctly and maintain flow.
  • • Verify supplier identities and load tickets and, when required, weigh trucks before and after unloading; record data.
  • • Stack and stage sorted logs safely in designated decks, booms, or bins.
  • • Coordinate transfer of sorted logs to mill lines, chippers, or shipping areas.
