Evaluate and grade logs in yards, decks, or millponds by inspecting defects, species, and dimensions, marking logs for processing and documenting results.
  • • Evaluate log characteristics and assign grades using established criteria.
  • • Inspect logs for defects such as splits, knots, rot, sweep, and water damage.
  • • Measure log length and diameter to support grading decisions.
  • • Mark logs with paint or tags to indicate grade, species, and destination.
  • • Mark boles for bucking according to mill specifications.
  • • Record grades and measurements in tally books or handheld systems.
  • • Identify substandard or special-grade logs for regrading, recutting, or diversion.
  • • Communicate with yard crews to direct sorting and log movement.
  • • Verify incoming loads meet procurement and mill specifications; flag noncompliant loads.
  • • Maintain and calibrate measuring tools, scale sticks, and marking equipment.
  • • Move through yards, log decks, or millponds to inspect and grade logs safely.
