Description
Measure and calculate the volume and marketable value of logs or pulpwood at yards, decks, or mill sites. Inspect for defects, apply scaling rules, and record measurements for inventory, payment, and processing.
  • • Apply standard scaling rules to determine log or pulpwood volume and value.
  • • Inspect logs for defects such as water damage, splits, knots, rot, sweep, and broken ends to adjust scale.
  • • Measure log lengths and diameters using scale sticks, tapes, calipers, or electronic devices.
  • • Record measurements and load data in tally books or handheld collection terminals.
  • • Mark logs with identification or scale information, or call out data to log markers.
  • • Weigh log trucks before and after unloading and document weights and supplier identities.
  • • Identify and segregate substandard or special logs for rework or alternate processing.
  • • Measure log lengths and mark boles for bucking according to specifications.
  • • Communicate with equipment operators by signals or radio to direct log movement.
  • • Drive to mills, log decks, landings, or wharves to scale logs or pulpwood.
  • • Arrange or coordinate hauling of logs to appropriate mill sites when required.
  • • Trim or saw log ends as needed to meet scaling or bucking specifications.
