Description
Under supervision, perform manual labor to restore, maintain, and protect wetlands, marshes, and riparian areas by planting native vegetation; controlling invasive plants, pests, and diseases; and constructing or maintaining features that manage water, erosion, and sediment. Duties may include operating small boats and equipment, monitoring site conditions, and supporting public access and safety.
- • Inspect and maintain waders, boats, pumps, hand tools, and sprayers before use.
- • Coordinate with crew on safety, water levels, access routes, and daily work plans.
- • Assist with prescribed burns or wildfire response in marsh or wet prairie under supervision.
- • Build or repair erosion and water-control features such as silt fence, coir logs, culverts, and beaver flow devices.
- • Cut and remove invasive shrubs or trees according to treatment plans.
- • Identify and remove invasive or diseased wetland vegetation using hand or power tools.
- • Apply herbicides to invasive species following labels and permits; spot-treat pests or diseases as directed.
- • Thin dense vegetation to promote native plant establishment and hydrologic flow.
- • Record counts of plants treated, planted, or removed and track acres treated.
- • Install or repair boundary signs, fences, boardwalks, and exclusion cages.
- • Prune or cut back vegetation to maintain access, sightlines, and habitat structure.
- • Select native wetland plugs or bare-root stock, prepare sites, and plant according to restoration plans.
- • Assist monitoring crews by clearing transects, setting stakes, and holding levels; read staff gauges or piezometers as directed.
- • Educate visitors and help enforce rules on access, pets, boating, fires, and waste disposal.
- • Operate UTVs, small boats, marsh buggies, or small excavators to move materials and prepare sites.
- • Maintain wetland access points and recreation areas; remove trash, restock supplies, and clean facilities.
- • Sort and handle native plant material and seed, discarding substandard stock per guidelines.
