Description
Under supervision, perform manual labor to develop, maintain, and protect forests, woodlands, wetlands, and rangelands by raising and transporting seedlings; controlling insects, pests, and diseases; and building structures to manage water, erosion, and soil leaching. May serve as a forester aide, seedling puller, tree planter, or gatherer of nontimber products such as pine straw.
- • Check equipment to ensure it operates properly.
- • Coordinate with coworkers on safety, cutting heights, and work needs.
- • Fight wildland fires or assist with prescribed burns under supervision.
- • Build fire breaks and dispose of brush for fire protection.
- • Select or fell trees according to markings, sizes, types, or grades.
- • Identify and remove diseased or undesirable trees using power or hand saws.
- • Apply insecticides or herbicides to vegetation as directed.
- • Thin or space trees using power thinning saws.
- • Keep tallies of trees marked, measured, or counted.
- • Erect signs or fences using posthole diggers, shovels, and hand tools.
- • Prune or shear tree tops or limbs to control growth or improve form.
- • Select seedlings, prepare sites, and plant trees with manual tools.
- • Assist forest survey crews by clearing sight lines, holding tools, or setting stakes.
- • Explain and enforce regulations for camping, vehicle use, fires, buildings, and sanitation.
- • Operate skidders, bulldozers, or other equipment for site preparation and scarification.
- • Maintain campsites and recreation areas; replenish supplies and clean facilities.
- • Sort tree seedlings and discard substandard stock per standards or instructions.
