Description
Provide technical assistance for managing, monitoring, and restoring rangelands and related natural resources. Collect and analyze data on vegetation, soils, water, grazing use, and habitat conditions; implement range improvements; and assist range or conservation scientists in improving and protecting rangelands and wildlife habitats.
- • Survey for noxious weeds, sensitive species, and riparian condition; collect plant, soil, and water samples for analysis.
- • Train and lead seasonal crews in vegetation monitoring, weed control, and range improvement maintenance.
- • Monitor grazing operations and contractor activities for compliance with permits and best management practices.
- • Lay out and flag locations for fences, pipelines, tanks, and other range improvements; prepare basic maps or sketches.
- • Implement and supervise invasive plant management and brush control using manual, mechanical, and chemical methods.
- • Support prescribed fire planning and implementation; assist with wildfire prevention, detection, and initial attack support as qualified.
- • Survey, measure, and map pastures, allotment boundaries, riparian zones, and burned areas using GPS and GIS.
- • Patrol rangelands to protect resources, deter unauthorized use, and report damage or hazards.
- • Inform users of regulations on grazing, vehicle use, fire safety, and resource protection; assist with compliance checks.
- • Maintain records of AUM use, utilization measurements, and range condition and trend data.
- • Oversee construction, repair, and upkeep of fences, gates, corrals, water developments, and erosion-control structures.
- • Assist with processing grazing permits, range use authorizations, and special-use or fire permits.
- • Develop and maintain field databases and digital filing systems for monitoring and project data.
- • Establish transects and plots; measure vegetation cover, frequency, biomass, stubble height, and soil stability; record and QA/QC data.
- • Plan and coordinate access and logistics for range monitoring and project crews.
- • Provide outreach and technical guidance to permittees, landowners, and community groups on grazing management and rangeland stewardship.
- • Conduct revegetation and restoration activities, including site preparation, seeding, native plant out-planting, and erosion control.
- • Assist with range and habitat research, including experimental design setup, data collection, and equipment maintenance.
- • Produce and update maps of allotments, improvements, treatments, and monitoring sites using GIS and mobile apps.
- • Operate and maintain field equipment and vehicles, including ATVs/UTVs, sprayers, GPS units, and fencing tools.
