Description
Forestry Aides provide field and technical support to foresters and conservation specialists in managing, protecting, and restoring forests and related natural resources. Typical duties include data collection, reforestation and vegetation management, fire prevention and suppression support, public contact, and assistance with surveys, mapping, and monitoring.
- • Assist foresters with field surveys, measurements, and mapping of forest stands and access roads.
- • Collect data on stand composition, tree size, health, fuels, and site conditions using GPS and handheld tools.
- • Help mark trees for thinning, harvest, or protection under supervision.
- • Perform thinning, brushing, and invasive plant control using hand tools and approved chemicals.
- • Support reforestation activities, including site preparation, seedling handling, and tree planting.
- • Assist with nursery operations, seed orchard tasks, and cone collection as directed.
- • Patrol forest and recreation sites to protect resources, deter damage, and assist visitors.
- • Provide basic information on regulations, fire safety, and resource protection; report violations.
- • Support wildfire prevention, detection, and initial attack operations as trained.
- • Help train and direct seasonal crews in planting, fuels reduction, trail work, and facility upkeep.
- • Monitor logging and other contractor activities; document compliance and site conditions.
- • Maintain tally and condition records for harvested timber and transported logs.
- • Enter, validate, and maintain field data in databases and GIS systems.
- • Measure distances, clear sightlines, establish plots, and record notes for survey crews.
- • Assist with layout, flagging, and inspection of access routes, trails, and forest roads.
- • Support insect and disease monitoring; inspect trees and collect samples for analysis.
- • Participate in public outreach and basic forestry education activities.
- • Assist conservation scientists with rangeland and wildlife habitat monitoring and improvement projects.
- • Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and safety gear; follow safety protocols.
- • Prepare routine reports, maps, and photo documentation of field activities.
