Forest and Conservation Technicians
Description
Provide field and technical support to foresters in managing, improving, and protecting forests and related natural resources. Collect and analyze forest inventory and condition data; implement silviculture, timber sale preparation, and fire prevention and suppression; and maintain maps, records, and equipment. May train and lead crews and assist with habitat and recreation management.
  • • Train and lead seasonal crews in planting, fuels reduction, trail and facility maintenance, and fire suppression.
  • • Monitor logging operations and contractor compliance with prescriptions and safety standards.
  • • Select, mark, and tally trees for thinning or harvest; flag unit boundaries and special sites.
  • • Conduct timber cruises and forest inventories, measuring plots and recording species, diameters, heights, and defects.
  • • Thin stands and treat fuels; control invasive plants and competing vegetation using tools and herbicides.
  • • Assist with wildfire prevention, detection, initial attack, and mop-up; maintain fire equipment.
  • • Support prescribed burn planning and implementation, including line prep and ignition under supervision.
  • • Survey, GPS, and map roads, trails, unit perimeters, burns, and harvest areas.
  • • Patrol forest areas to protect resources, deter vandalism, and ensure visitor safety.
  • • Explain and enforce regulations on resource use, fire restrictions, and safety.
  • • Track log accountability and product volumes from harvest units to mills.
  • • Assist with nursery, reforestation, and silviculture operations: site prep, cone collection, seed handling, and planting.
  • • Inspect trees for insects, disease, and damage; collect and process samples.
  • • Maintain and update GIS and database records; prepare field maps and reports.
  • • Measure distances, clear lines, and run instruments to support survey and layout crews.
  • • Assist in planning and overseeing construction or maintenance of access routes, landings, and forest roads.
  • • Provide forestry education and technical guidance to landowners, partners, and the public.
  • • Support wildlife and habitat projects, including surveys, placement of structures, and monitoring.
  • • Conduct or support field experiments and monitoring of soils, vegetation, insects, and fuels.
  • • Ensure job site safety, equipment maintenance, and compliance with environmental best practices.
