Description
Set up, operate, or tend edging machines to grind, bevel, and polish edges of materials such as glass, stone, or metal to specified profiles and finishes.
- • Read work orders and drawings to determine edge profiles, dimensions, and finish requirements.
- • Set up edgers and adjust guides, wheels, belts, and fixtures per specifications.
- • Start, stop, and adjust edging, beveling, and polishing machinery to maintain quality and flow.
- • Observe machine operation to ensure continuity, safety, and efficient performance, and to detect malfunctions.
- • Inspect parts visually and by feel to verify bevel, radius, and finish meet standards.
- • Measure thickness, edge dimensions, and angles using calipers, gauges, and templates.
- • Record production, inspection results, and machine settings in logs or electronic systems.
- • Select, install, dress, and true grinding wheels, belts, or pads.
- • Set feed rates, wheel speeds, pressure, and passes to achieve required edge fineness.
- • Apply and regulate coolant or water flow to control temperature and chip removal.
- • Load and position parts on conveyors, tables, or fixtures and secure with clamps or vacuum.
- • Transfer materials and finished pieces between work areas using carts, hoists, or conveyors.
- • Clear jams and remove broken pieces; clean debris from guards and conveyors.
- • Clean, adjust, and perform routine maintenance on edgers and accessory equipment.
- • Inspect and replace worn belts, bearings, guides, chains, or seals.
- • Tend pumps, filters, and recirculating systems; monitor coolant clarity and levels.
- • Test edge samples for finish and chip resistance; coordinate lab checks when required.
- • Mark racks or bins with job numbers, material type, and edge profile.
- • Reject and segregate defective pieces and readjust equipment to correct issues.
- • Notify supervisors or maintenance of needed repairs or recurring faults.
- • Maintain a clean, safe work area and follow PPE and lockout/tagout procedures.
- • Mix and add abrasives or polishing compounds as specified.
