Sheet Metal Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Programmer
Computer Numerically Controlled Tool ProgrammersDescription
Program and optimize CNC laser, turret punch, and press brake equipment to cut and form sheet metal parts. Use CAD/CAM to create nests, tool paths, and setup documentation; may also assist with machine setup, trials, and basic maintenance.
- • Review job orders, drawings, and CAD files to identify flat patterns, materials, thicknesses, tolerances, and grain direction.
- • Calculate bend allowances/deductions and unfold 3D models to accurate flat blanks.
- • Plan operation sequences for punching, laser cutting, forming, tapping, and bending.
- • Select punch tools, forming tools, laser nozzles, assist gases, and cutting parameters based on material and thickness.
- • Create sheet nests to maximize material utilization and minimize setups and pierces.
- • Define tool paths, lead-ins/outs, microtabs, common-line cutting, clamp avoidance, and pierce points to control heat and distortion.
- • Program CNC laser, turret punch, and combo machines in CAM and post controller-ready NC code.
- • Program press brake bends or generate bend data, stage tooling, and note bend order.
- • Simulate programs and conduct dry runs to verify geometry, fit, cut quality, and cycle time.
- • Revise programs to correct errors and improve throughput, quality, and tool life, maintaining revision control.
- • Generate setup sheets, tool lists, turret load maps, bend charts, and part labels for production.
- • Manage tool libraries, material databases, and machine parameters; distribute and back up programs via DNC or network.
- • Inspect first-article parts against drawings and tolerances and update programs as needed.
- • Coordinate with engineering, operators, and schedulers to resolve manufacturability issues and plan changeovers.
- • Perform preventive maintenance or minor adjustments on punches, dies, nozzles, lenses, and workholding; verify machine calibration.
