CNC Set Up Operator (Computer Numerical Control Set Up Operator)

Computer Numerically Controlled Tool Operators
Description
Set up and prove out CNC machines or robots for production on metal, plastic, or other materials. Install and align tooling and fixtures, load and verify programs, set offsets and parameters, run first articles, and hand off to operators; perform minor edits and maintenance.
  • • Review blueprints, program specs, and setup sheets to plan operations and sequencing.
  • • Select, mount, align, and secure tooling, workholding, and workpieces using precision instruments.
  • • Preset and measure tool lengths and diameters; enter and verify tool offsets.
  • • Establish work coordinate systems and part zeros using probes, edge finders, or indicators.
  • • Calculate and set spindle speeds, feeds, depths of cut, and tool paths as required.
  • • Load, retrieve, or transfer CNC programs from servers to machine controllers.
  • • Perform dry runs and single-block prove-outs to verify programs and clearances.
  • • Edit or modify programs and parameters to correct issues, and save revised versions.
  • • Adjust machine feeds, speeds, and controls when programming or conditions require.
  • • Listen during prove-out to detect chatter, vibration, or tool wear and correct problems.
  • • Replace dull, broken, or incorrect cutting tools and update offsets.
  • • Check and control coolant and lubrication levels and delivery during setup.
  • • Verify first-article dimensions using precision measuring instruments and record results.
  • • Document setup parameters and update setup sheets for repeatability.
  • • Confer with supervisors, programmers, or engineers to resolve malfunctions or obtain approval.
  • • Stop machines to change tooling, adjust fixtures, or reposition workpieces per sequence.
  • • Stage tools, fixtures, and programs to set up future jobs while machines are running.
  • • Maintain machines and the work area; perform minor preventive maintenance and cleaning.
  • • Ensure workpieces are properly supported, clamped, lubricated, and cooled during initial runs.
  • • Input initial part dimensions, offsets, and control data into machine panels.
  • • Monitor control panel displays and compare to specs to detect anomalies during prove-out.
  • • Lift and position workpieces or fixtures using hoists or cranes following safe practices.
  • • Write simple CNC programs or macros when needed for setup or production.
