Description
Designs chemical plant equipment and devises processes to manufacture chemicals and products, such as gasoline, synthetic rubber, plastics, detergents, cement, paper, and pulp, by applying principles and technology of chemistry, physics, and engineering.
  • • Develop safety procedures for workers operating equipment or working near chemical reactions.
  • • Determine the most effective arrangement of unit operations such as mixing, crushing, heat transfer, distillation, and drying.
  • • Prepare production cost estimates and progress reports for management.
  • • Direct activities of operators and contractors constructing, operating, or improving absorption, evaporation, or electromagnetic equipment.
  • • Perform laboratory studies on manufacturing steps for new products and test proposed processes in pilot-scale operations.
  • • Develop processes to separate components of liquids or gases or to generate electrical currents using controlled chemical reactions.
  • • Conduct research to develop and improve chemical manufacturing processes.
  • • Design measurement and control systems for chemical plants based on laboratory and pilot-plant data.
  • • Design and plan equipment layouts.
  • • Troubleshoot chemical manufacturing process upsets and equipment issues.
  • • Evaluate equipment and processes to optimize performance and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • • Perform tests and monitor processes throughout production to control variables such as temperature, density, specific gravity, and pressure.
  • • Monitor and analyze process and experimental data to inform decisions.
