Description
Conduct research on atmospheric processes to improve weather and climate prediction, integrating observations from surface and upper-air stations, satellites, and radar with advanced numerical models, data assimilation, and analytics to generate new knowledge and decision-support tools.
- • Design and execute studies of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, and precipitation processes.
- • Develop algorithms, software, and workflows for data processing, modeling, and visualization.
- • Design or improve instruments and remote sensing methods for atmospheric observations.
- • Perform model verification, validation, and intercomparison studies, including wind assessment.
- • Generate maps, graphics, and interactive visualizations to communicate findings.
- • Estimate impacts of climate change on regional weather, extremes, and water resources.
- • Evaluate effects of emissions, pollution, or industrial projects on air quality and atmospheric composition.
- • Interpret multi-source environmental data to formulate short- and long-range predictions.
- • Prepare peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and data documentation.
- • Present results and briefings to sponsors, agencies, and scientific conferences.
- • Collaborate with government, academic, and industry partners to translate research into operations.
- • Manage research projects, budgets, timelines, and compliance requirements.
- • Mentor students or staff and deliver training on modeling, coding, or instrumentation.
- • Develop and maintain reproducible codebases in languages such as Python, R, Fortran, or C++.
- • Curate and share datasets and model outputs following FAIR and organizational standards.
- • Contribute to proposal writing and resource planning to secure research funding.
- • Provide expert guidance on weather hazards, uncertainty, and risk communication for stakeholders.
- • Gather, quality-control, and archive data from surface, upper-air, satellite, and radar observing systems.
- • Lead or support field campaigns, including radiosonde launches and in situ measurements from aircraft or ships.
- • Develop, calibrate, and run numerical weather and climate models for research applications.
- • Implement and evaluate data assimilation methods to merge observations with model states.
- • Conduct sensitivity, ensemble, and hindcast experiments to assess predictability and uncertainty.
- • Analyze historical and real-time meteorological and climate datasets using statistical and geophysical techniques.
