Description
Select, breed, and manage horses based on pedigree, conformation, and performance traits. Utilize live cover or artificial insemination and coordinate reproductive procedures such as ultrasound and embryo transfer. Maintain detailed records of estrus cycles, coverings/inseminations, foalings, and registrations.
  • • Feed and water horses; clean and disinfect stalls, foaling stalls, barns, and paddocks.
  • • Monitor mares, foals, and stallions for signs of illness, lameness, or injury; assist with foaling and neonatal care.
  • • Administer vaccinations and dewormers per veterinary protocols.
  • • Select mares, stallions, and semen based on bloodlines, traits, and breeding goals.
  • • Treat minor wounds and ailments and coordinate veterinary care for serious conditions.
  • • Detect and track estrus using teasing, behavior observation, and vet scans; adjust conditioning as needed.
  • • Record body condition, weights, growth, nutrition, and training status.
  • • Present stallions, mares, and offspring at breed inspections, sales, and shows.
  • • Maintain and repair barns, stalls, fencing, paddocks, and breeding sheds.
  • • Clip coats and trim manes, tails, and whiskers as needed.
  • • Collect, extend, package, and label equine semen; document date, source, motility, and concentration.
  • • Maintain breeding books, semen inventory, and mare/stallion records.
  • • Arrange sales of stallion services, embryos, weanlings, and performance prospects; manage contracts and registrations.
  • • Measure doses and load semen into AI pipettes or syringes for insemination.
  • • Perform artificial insemination by passing pipette through the cervix and depositing semen in the uterus.
  • • Manage barn ventilation, lighting, and temperature for equine health and safety.
  • • Evaluate semen microscopically for motility and concentration; extend or dilute per protocols.
  • • Microchip, brand, or mark horses for identification and registry compliance.
  • • Purchase and stock feed, bedding, supplements, and medical supplies.
  • • Bathe, groom, and pick hooves; schedule farrier services.
  • • Exercise horses and manage turnout to maintain fitness and behavior.
